The Town of Lunenburg has established an annual Heritage Recognition Awards Program that recognizes and shows appreciation to property owners and developers on a job well done.
Restoration work on important buildings and infrastructure continues to keep our communities thriving and our streetscapes beautiful.
As part of the 5-year Lunenburg Waterfront Master Plan that Develop Nova Scotia co-created with community, the renovation of the Big Boat Shed and its addition received a 2021 Heritage Recognition Award.
At the end of Montague Street on Burma Road, this building was and is still is known as the Old Boat Shed. This building located in the Smith and Rhuland Ltd. “Shipyards” was built in the 1947-59 period and is notable for its laminated arch construction and multiple windows making the inside working area spacious and airy. Its addition and restoration was undertaken in a sensitive fashion to the building’s original architectural style blending the old with the new along with preserving the exterior look while incorporating modern materials. The extensive renovation work will enable the Big Boat Shed to carry on as a major boat building and repair facility for many years to come, helping to reinstate and fulfill its original function.
During the Town’s birthday on June 7, Mayor Matt Risser presented a Certificate of Recognition to Develop Nova Scotia team member Brian Webb, Regional Lead, Project Planning and Delivery, “For successfully blending an addition that contributes positively to the design of the original structure and rehabilitating a building that contribute positively to the design of the original structure”.
This project could not have been possible without the contributions of Develop Nova Scotia all stars like Nick MacMillan, Robin, Scott, Eva Parada, and Terry Drisdelle who did an outstanding job managing the project.
Thank you to the Town of Lunenburg, and many partners including the Province of Nova Scotia, Tourism Nova Scotia, ACOA, Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, and the Lunenburg Marine Museum Society.
